More info

Like many islands in the West Indies, the Dominican Republic produces salt because the salt industry does not require much investment and it is easy to set up on the coasts. The salt crystals are harvested six months a year and this unskilled work is often done by women. Salt production is an important industry in the world. There is a lot of salt on Earth. It can be found in sea water (30 g/l) and in marine rock salt deposits. It is produced by mine extraction (rock salt) or, in this case, through the sea water’s natural evaporation (marine salt). 257 million tons were produced in 2007. The United States and China each produced 20% of this amount and Germany, India and Canada were the other main producers. The chemical industry uses 70% of the salt consumed every year in the world whilst 10% is used to deice roads. The rest is used by the fishing industry (conservation), the food industry and to fill salt shakers.
