Geometric lines for air traffic signals and patching of cracks in the tarmac at the airfield in Gibraltar, a British territory at the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula, have created this curious work of abstract art. With 14.7 million direct and indirect jobs and 17 million jobs related to tourism, for which it is an indispensable tool, the air transport sector makes up an important part of the global economy and is constantly expanding. A hundred times more passengers and two hundred times more merchandise travel by air today than they did fifty years ago. Despite temporary drops in activity due to terrorism, for the past ten years air traffic has recorded a regular average growth of 6 percent per year (2.2 billion passengers in 2007). But discovering the world by airplane requires a lot of energy and is currently responsible for 3 percent of greenhouse gas emissions. This proportion could increase by 15 percent in 2050 if air transportation continues to grow at this pace.
