More info

In the midst of Nahuel Huapí National Park in the southwest of Neuquén province in Argentina, many high altitude glacial lakes (700 m on average) with intensely blue water lie at the base of the mountains and rocky peaks of the Andes. The region's humid climate favours the growth of southern beech trees (the Nothofagus pumilio and antarctica species) which have colonised the sides of the mountains and brighten them up with flamboyant colours in autumn. Further south, as the altitude significantly decreases, the beech forests give way to Patagonia steppe. This part of the Andes Mountain range between Argentina and Chile which is about 3 100 miles long is the longest natural terrestrial border on Earth. It includes the Aconcagua Mountain, the highest peak in the western hemisphere which dominates the entire South American continent at 6 960 m.
