More info

Located in the northwest of Senegal at the mouth of the river, the Saint-Louis region offers an ocean climate conditions favorable to leaf vegetable production from October to April. Land and water are available in abundance. Although agriculture employs nearly 70 percent of the country’s workforce, it represents only 15 percent of GDP and does not cover the food needs of the Senegalese (nearly 13 million inhabitants). The total area of arable land in Senegal is estimated at 9.3 million acres (3.8 million hectares), but nearly 50 percent of food products are imported. In 2008, after the conflicts related to famine, the government launched the GOANA (Large Agricultural Programme for Food and Agriculture) which stated aim was to solve the food crisis by ensuring the agricultural independence of the country, with an investment of 524 million Euros over a period of three to five years. In 2012 the production of cereals actually increased but the country still imports half of the rice it consumes.
