More info

Subject to the continental climate, the fertile plain of Salonica, the largest in Greek Macedonia, is particularly suited to raising wheat and sometimes fruit trees. Because of the hilly terrain of the Greek peninsula, farms remain small and fragmented despite programs for grouping lands and farm cooperatives. Thirty-three percent of the country’s ground area is cultivated, which is not sufficient to make Greek agriculture (16 percent of its GNP) truly competitive within the European Union. The widespread industrial development of the country during the 1970s caused the farm population to seriously decline; today it is only one-fourth of the active population, yet it remains the largest in Europe.
