More info

Palm groves are typical in the north and east of Uruguay. The country has around 70,000 hectares of rolling plains suitable for the cultivation of palm trees, most of which thrive on the sandy soil of the department of Rocha. the Butia capitata species is predominant in the east, where it covers an area of some 68,000 hectares to Rìo Grande do Sul, a southern frontier state of Brazil. Butia capitata is adaptable and drought tolerant. Its fruits are consumed by the local populations. Today however, it is threatened with extinction due to cattle breeding and agriculture. Only a few adult trees remain. The strong winds peculiar to the coastal regions, which favour the easy outbreak and quick spread of fires, and the livestock grazing on the young sprouts combine to prevent plants from growing. Only a few trees are destroyed directly by man, but cow and sheep breeding - Uruguay's main economic activity - affects the natural regeneration cycles of the ecosystem. Large protected areas are therefore needed for effective long-term conservation of both the Butia capitata palm tree and its ecosystem.
