More info

The Great Wall of China is the world’s biggest architectural work and it has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1987. The Badaling stretch of the Great Wall was the first to welcome tourists in 1957 and it has become very popular due to the fact that it is close to Beijing. Now, over 4 million people visit the site every year. However, this success has its drawbacks. The influx of tourists has caused degradation, and waste is piling up. A British man named William Lindesay who was the first foreigner to walk the whole wall (2470 kilometres) created an association called “Friends of the Great Wall” to fight this problem and its action has been recognized by the authorities. He has organised operations to collect waste as well as prevention campaigns during which small bins were distributed. The association also undertakes initiatives to conserve the wall.
