More info

Bangladesh is well endowed with rivers, lakes, ponds, estuaries and natural depressions which are suitable for fishing and especially aquaculture, in serious development nowadays. It is the 6th largest aquaculture producing country in the world and the second fresh water aquaculture producer in the world. The fish catch from mainland fishing is almost four times higher than catches made at sea in the Gulf of Bengal, due to the fact that the economic exclusive zone is relatively small (78.500 km2). Approximately 1.3 million people work in the fishing sector, mainly in the subsistence fishing and very often in a seasonal manner, whereas 3 million work in the aquiculture. Traditional fishing accounted for about 56% of the total fish production in 2004. Bangladeshis replace the consumption of red meat, too rare and expensive, by the fish. Each inhabitant consumes per year 14kg of fish, an insufficient amount according to FAO, which recommends a minimum consumption of 18 kg per year per capita.
