More info

The Folgefonna glacier is enclosed by the Hardangerfjorden and the Sørfjorden fords, in southern Norway. Its 212 km2 surface area means it is the third largest of the country's 1 500 glaciers. It is a typical temperate region plateau glacier and slides on a film of water formed between the rock and the ice. In summer, the partial melting of ice supplies the water of the fjords with silt, giving them a very unusual green tint. As well as seasonal melting, the volume of glaciers is also decreasing because of global warming and especially because of greenhouse gases produced by human activities. Despite these alarming signs, the United States which is responsible for 25% of greenhouse gas emissions even though it only has 5% of the world's population has, so far, refused to ratify the Kyoto Protocol. This international agreement which came into effect on February 16, 2005, is a first step taken voluntarily by industrial nations to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions. However, the United States is aware that, in the future, having techniques to reduce or store greenhouses gases will be a significant economic advantage. It is therefore one of the countries investing the most in this sector.
