More info

The lagoon of Venice in Italy is separated from the Adriatic Sea by a string of long and narrow barrier islands, among which that of Lido where the island and fishermen’s village of Pellestrina is situated. Constituted of 118 islets, the historical city of Venice built fifteen centuries ago is more and more frequently subjected to the acqua alta, a rise of the water level which causes regular flooding. The phenomenon has become more severe over the last thirty years during which the city has been repeatedly inundated, with flood level reaching over a metre nearly a hundred times. In order to protect this high place of tourism, a site listed as world heritage by UNESCO in 1987, the ambitious and costly Moses Project has been selected in 2002, with a view to block the channels between the lagoon and the sea. 80 movable flood barriers should be installed and operational by 2011
