More info

There are so many glaciers (about 3,000) in Kyrgyzstan, covering such a vast surface area (2,500 mi2 [6,475 km2]), that some haven’t even been named yet. Their slow descent hollows out the valleys of the Tian Shan (“celestial mountains,” in Chinese) mountain range. Stretching 1,550 mi (2,494 km), this mountain range has the most peaks higher than 20,000 ft (6,096 m), after the Himalayas. The highest of these, Pobedy Peak, reaches 24,406 ft (7,439 m). In the heart of Central Asia, hemmed in by Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, and China, Kyrgyzstan is perched at an average altitude of more than 9,800 ft (2,987 m). Steep mountains cover about 95 percent of its territory, leaving little room for sedentary agriculture. The country is therefore rooted in a nomadic tradition centered on horse breeding, which remains prevalent to this day.
