More info

The city of Bodnath is home to one of the holiest temples in Nepal particularly venerated by the thousands of Tibetan exiles who now live in this neighbouring country. This stupa which is a tumulus-shaped reliquary with a tower on top is believed to contain a fragment of one of Buddha's bones. At 40 m high with a diameter of 40 m, it is the largest in Nepal. This sanctuary's a architecture is full of allegorical patterns: outer space and the elements (earth, water, fire, wind, ether) are symbolized; Buddha's eyes are staring at the four cardinal points and the different stages of supreme knowledge, Nirvana, are represented by the tower's thirteen steps. On religious holidays, the monument is decorated with yellow clay and adorned with prayer flags. It is estimated that Buddhism now has more than 300 million followers throughout the world but it is difficult to make a more precise estimate. Indeed, Asian religions are rarely exclusive and it is hard to evaluate the influence Buddhism has had in Communist countries like China.
