More info

The tires of motorized two-wheelers traced these stunning arabesques on the surface of an athletic field outside Doha, the capital of Qatar, where a few teenagers have gathered. With a population of a little more than 900,000, more than three-fifths of whom are immigrants, the small peninsula of Qatar is a complex mosaic. A minority Qatari population, eager to preserve its traditions, lives together with a Western- and Arab-born elite with whom it shares the country’s key economic positions. Pakistani, Indian, and Iranian immigrant workers, who make up the bulk of the workforce, account for nearly half the country’s population. Since the workers are primarily male, Qatar is in the exceptional situation of having nearly twice as many men as women.
