More info

The city of Udaipur is one of the most beautiful in India, its marble palaces contributing to its international fame. Mining is a major activity in the state of Rajasthan. Marble, lignite, cadmium and phosphate are extracted from mines, most of which are open pit, and processed on-site. Rock phosphate is an indispensible mineral to produce fertilizer. Jhamar Kotra Mine in the Udaipur district is the only source of natural rock phosphate in India and even its entire production does not provide enough fertilizer for the whole country, which must therefore import more. This mine is run by the State of Rajasthan, while the phosphate grinding is carried out by Rama Phosphates Limited, a private Indian company. To remain profitable, mechanized mining must be carried out on a large scale. Phosphate fertilizers are essential in India which, with a population of 1.21 billion people, remains mainly an agricultural country. The use of natural phosphates is encouraged by the FAO in the context of its efforts to promote sustainable agriculture able to feed the greatest number of people. But this resource is a limited one. This is why phosphate is estimated to «peak» in the world around 2030-2040. Besides, phosphate is unevenly spread over the earth’s surface.
