More info

Roads are rare in central Africa, especially the well-maintained ones and in usable conditions. This is why the Congo River, the second largest in the world by volume of water and the second longest in Africa, second only to the Nile, with 4.700 km, allows men and their goods to travel through a great part of its course and of its tributaries. Besides, building roads is at the same time very expensive and devastating to the environment. The Congo river drains the second largest tropical forest area on the planet and is located on the Equator line. The river is also navigable during the whole year. Hundreds of people pile up on boats pushed by engines that can reach over 1.000 tons. The trip is risky and might last several weeks. A storm or an accident may cost the life of the passangers. In 2011, hundreds of people died after a crash during the night on the river.
