The limestone mountains that dominate the Sultanate of Oman are actually emerged sea floors consequence of the contact between the Arabian Peninsula and the Eurasian plate during major tectonic movements. Isolated at the extreme north from the rest of the country by the United Arab Emirates, the Musandam Peninsula juts out into the Strait of Hormuz, which connects the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman. The desolate heights bear little if any vegetation; nevertheless, on these mountains, which rise 6,500 feet (2,000 m) above sea level, the Shihuh villagers graze their herds after the rainy season. Here they also plant date palms, encircling the land with small stone walls. The walls not only protect the crops from hungry goats; they also help to retain water and limit erosion, by trapping the fertile silt during the rare but violent rains in winter.
