More info

The Andes Cordillera and its foothills cover one-third of the territory of Peru. In the country's southern region, between Cuzco and Arequipa, the mountains reach peaks of more than 6,000 m, progressively giving way to the high Andes plateaus, situated between altitudes of 3,500 and 4,500 m, known as Puna. The people who live here are one of the only sedentary populations that live at such a high altitude; the other example is in Tibet. The Andes Cordillera is a young formation, created 20 million years ago after upheavals of the earth's surface and accumulation of deposits of sandstone and granite. It extends over a length of 7,500 km along the Pacific coast of South America, crossing seven countries from the Caribbean Sea all the way to Cape Horn. It is the only mountain chain that maintains such a high altitude uninterrupted over such a long distance
